Understanding AdBlue

Before we dive into the warning light, let’s briefly explain what AdBlue is. AdBlue is a trade name for a urea-based diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) that is used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. SCR systems are designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. AdBlue is injected into the exhaust stream, where it reacts with NOx to convert it into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

The AdBlue Warning Light

What Does It Look Like? The AdBlue warning varies by manufacturer. Common warnings are “engine start not possible” or a light that  typically resembles a blue container with a wave-like symbol, representing liquid. It is usually displayed on the vehicle’s dashboard.

What Does It Indicate? When the AdBlue warning light illuminates, it signifies that the AdBlue level in your vehicle is running low or that there is a malfunction in the AdBlue system.

Common Reasons for the AdBlue Warning Light

  1. Low AdBlue Level: The most common reason for the warning light is that the AdBlue level in your car’s tank is approaching a critically low level. Most vehicles have an AdBlue tank that requires periodic refilling, similar to refueling with diesel.

  2. AdBlue System Malfunction: Sometimes, the warning light can illuminate due to a malfunction in the AdBlue system. This could be caused by a faulty AdBlue pump, injector, or sensor.

What to Do When the AdBlue Warning Light Comes On

  1. Refill the AdBlue Tank: If the AdBlue warning light comes on, the first step is to check the AdBlue tank level. Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the location of the AdBlue tank and proper filling procedures. Ensure you use the correct type of AdBlue fluid to avoid contamination.

  2. Address System Malfunctions: If the warning light persists even after refilling the AdBlue tank, our AdBlue delete service will electronically disable the AdBlue system along with removing the associated dashboard lights and warning messages.

The AdBlue and SCR system is a relatively complex system with an array of electronic sensors, modules and pumps. As well as being expensive to maintain, these systems often fail usually with the car unable to start and an AdBlue related warning on the dash. Disabling the AdBlue system is normally completed by reprogramming the engine management system, however some vehicles will require a small electronic unit to be hardwired into the vehicle.
