Why You Might Need to Defeat the Immobiliser on Your Car: Understanding the Reasons

Legitimate Reasons for Defeating the Immobiliser

  1. Lost or Malfunctioning Keys: One of the most common legitimate reasons for needing to defeat the immobiliser is when you have lost all keys or key fobs to your car. In such cases, you may need to bypass the immobilizer to gain access to your vehicle.

  2. Emergency Situations: In certain emergency situations, such as when a medical emergency occurs inside the car, defeating the immobiliser may be necessary to access the vehicle quickly.

  3. Immobiliser Repair or Replacement: If the immobiliser unit itself is malfunctioning and requires repair or replacement, temporarily bypassing it might be necessary to move the vehicle for servicing.

  4. Key Fob Battery Failure: If the battery in your key fob dies and you are unable to start the car, you may need to temporarily bypass the immobiliser to get the car to a safe location or replace the battery.

Defeating the immobiliser on your car should always be a carefully considered decision made in exceptional circumstances and for legitimate reasons. It is essential to act responsibly, comply with legal requirements, and seek professional assistance to ensure the safety and security of your vehicle. 

If your car will start and run but shuts off immediately with the “car in key” symbol then you may have an immobiliser fault (usually with the fault code P1570 or 17978). An immobilizer delete may help. 

If the car does not start and run at all, then the issue NOT immobilizer related.  Deleting the immobilizer will NOT help if the no-start is caused by something like a dead battery, out of gas, or some other mechanical problem.
